THE ROODEPAN police marked the beginning of Women’s Month with impactful outreach programmes at Pescodia and Roodepan high schools in Kimberley.
According to police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane, the initiative, aimed at empowering young female learners, saw the Roodepan Firearms, Liquor, and Second-Hand Goods (FLASH) Unit collaborate with the Roodepan Liquor Forum to donate sanitary towels.
The provincial junior commissioner for the Northern Cape, Simone van Rooyen, a learner at Pescodia High, commenced the proceedings with a prayer and a warm welcome to the guests on August 1.
Constable Charmaine Mokgatlhe from the FLASH section explained the day’s purpose, while Elizabeth Johnson, chairperson of the Roodepan Liquor Forum, addressed the learners on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse, and the importance of avoiding teenage pregnancies.
The Roodepan station commander, Colonel Pieter Jansen, encouraged the learners to prioritise their education and to steer clear of substance abuse. He then handed over care packs to the learners.
Sergeant Shemane said the South African Police Service (SAPS) will persist in its efforts to engage with youth of all ages and provide them with opportunities to actively participate in youth-based crime prevention activities.
