RESIDENTS of Bloemanda in Galeshewe are outraged over goats that are being kept in a yard in the neighbourhood, saying that it is a health hazard.

The goats sleep in the small residential yard and are fed by the homeowner.

The residents said that approximately eight goats are kept in the yard throughout most of the day.

Apparently, the owner takes the goats out grazing in the morning and returns back to the yard at around lunchtime.

A community member pointed out that the smell coming from the yard is “unbearable”.

Residents further raised concerns that their homes are “flooded with flies” and they cannot sit outside their houses due to the stench. Another concern is that the goats damage the fences, while several residents said that their children are “traumatised” by the noise when the goats fight.

The residents said that they have approached the ward councillor and members of the neighbourhood watch to intervene, but their pleas are “falling on deaf ears”.

Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Thoko Riet said no livestock is allowed to be kept in a residential area.

Riet added that the municipality is not aware of the situation. “If that is the case, steps will be taken by our livestock impounding section,” she warned.
