WITH the increase in deaths since the outbreak of Covid-19, many families in Kimberley are opting to bury their loved ones during the week.

Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Thoko Riet said on Monday that the local authority had seen an increase in the number of funerals taking place during the week, between Tuesday and Friday.

“At the West End Cemetery alone, we had 12 burials during the week last week,” Riet said.

Last weekend, the municipality had 51 burials throughout its cemeteries, including 28 at West End Cemetery, seven at Roodepan Cemetery, 11 at ABC and five at Ritchie.

“So far the municipality has not encountered any problems regarding overcrowding,” Riet added.

She pointed out that the municipality urged residents to hold funerals during the week where possible as it helped prevent overcrowding and to ensure social distancing.
