It is believed that the ‘dangerous’ hole was left open by municipal workers three weeks ago.

IPOPENG residents have continued to raise concerns about a “dangerous” hole that was left open by municipal workers three weeks ago.

According to the residents, Sol Plaatje Municipality workers fixed a burst water pipe in Kgakgamatso Street but failed to close up the hole after completing the repairs.

Residents now fear that a car will crash into the hole or that their children will be injured playing in it.

“The hole isn’t easily visible,” one resident said, “as it is situated on a bend and a motorist could easily not see it and drive his vehicle straight into it.”

A concerned mother said she had to constantly keep an eye on the hole, which she feared would fill up with water after the rain, becoming a potential “death trap” for children in the area.

“We have been praying and hoping that the workers will remember that they left this place open, but they have not returned. It seems like they have closed this chapter,” said the mother.

Municipal spokesperson Sello Matsie on Wednesday promised that a team will be dispatched to make the area safe.
