SOL PLAATJE Municipality has promised to address refuse removal backlogs in residential and commercial areas of the city by the end of the week.

Municipal spokesperson Thoko Riet said on Tuesday that the local authority was aware of the accumulation of refuse on pavements and in open areas as well as of incidents of illegal dumping.

“For various reasons, a large portion of the refuse collection fleet is unserviceable and refuse could not be collected. However, today (Tuesday) has seen the implementation of a plan to ensure the availability of sufficient vehicles and the removal of the backlog is in progress,” said Riet.

She added that all areas would be serviced and the backlog should be alleviated “by Friday at the latest”.

“The plan to address the serviceability of vehicles is focused on the sustainability of the refuse removal service in the long term and areas experiencing a backlog – areas such as Galeshewe and Roodepan (including adjacent areas) – will be attended to. We regret the inconvenience caused,” Riet said.
