THE PROVINCIAL Head for Family Violence,Child Protection and Sexual Offences, Brigadier Nicky Mills welcomed the 15 year direct rape sentence that was handed down to Lukas Afrikaner, 52, in the Pofadder Magistrates Court earlier this week.

The incident happened on July 12 2019 at about 11pm when the 16-year-old female victim was on her way home after visiting with some friends in RC Mission, Onseepkans.

The accused accosted the victim from behind and dragged her into the mountains where he repeatedly raped her.

After raping the victim, Afrikaner left her there and fled the scene.

The police followed up on information and arrested the suspect on July 19 2019. He remained in custody until his sentencing on June 17 2021.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner for the Northern Cape, Major-General Henriette de Waal commended Detective Sergeant John Rowen Nortje for his professionalism and commitment that brought about the outcome.

“Thank you for keeping our communities safe from criminals committing such heinous crimes against our children, especially as we are celebrating youth month,” said De Waal.
