Rapist sentenced to five years in prison

The Upington Regional Court handed down a five-year prison sentence to a 24-year-old man for raping a 21-year-old woman in Riemvasmaak, Kakamas.

THE UPINGTON Regional Court handed down a five-year prison sentence to a 24-year-old man following his conviction for the rape of a 21-year-old woman in Riemvasmaak, Kakamas.

The incident occurred on September 30, 2021.

According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam, the accused, Joseph Lucas, entered the victim’s home and forced himself on the woman before raping her.

In addition to the prison sentence handed down, the court also declared Lucas unfit to possess a firearm. His name will also be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, praised the diligent work of the investigating office, Detective Warrant Officer Edwin Mokgalagadi, which helped “ensure that justice was served”.
