The media and communications officer at the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Madimetja Moleba, added that the Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, and officials from the Northern Cape provincial government would join in the celebrations to commemorate women as “active agents of change and social transformation”.
“The President is expected to deliver the keynote address while McKenzie will be the programme director. This year’s campaign will take stock of progress made on the socio-economic empowerment of marginalised women, the fight against gender-based violence and femicide and gender inequality,” said Moleba.
He indicated that about 3,000 guests and dignitaries were expected to attend the event.
“The programme will start at 8am and a variety of artists will perform, followed by the keynote address that will be delivered at around 11am.
“Various government departments and entities will provide services on the ground for the community of Pofadder, including a Department of Home Affairs mobile unit.”
Moleba said that strict security measures were in place for the presidential visit.
Meanwhile, several build-up programmes under the auspices of Operation Basadi are taking place ahead of the national Women’s Day celebrations.
SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said the Namaqua district commissioner, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, Pofadder SAPS station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Sophia Abrahams-Willemse, Colonel Maggie Ndzutha from Provincial Social Crime Prevention, the provincial head of Proactive Policing, Brigadier Irene Kopeledi, and Babatjie Laban from the Office of the Premier visited Boesmanland High School in Pofadder on Tuesday.
“Pupils were educated on the importance of school safety and the prevention of gender-based violence, as well as the dangers of substance and alcohol abuse and the possession of dangerous weapons at school. Pupils were also encouraged to abstain from sexual conduct and to prevent teenage pregnancy and to embrace discipline, respect and good manners.”
