SOL PLAATJE Municipality said on Tuesday that work was on track to install a new abstraction pump at Riverton to draw raw water from the Vaal River.

Nightly water interruptions were introduced in Kimberley from 8pm until 5am on Sunday and are expected to continue until this coming Sunday.

Municipal spokesperson Thabo Mothibi said on Tuesday that a 200 volt-amps (kVA) transformer set to supply power to the pump was lifted into the pump station tower on Monday.

“Modifications on a new 110kW motor are being done and it will also be fitted into the pump. All tasks are to be completed on Thursday and will be followed by full pumping capacity,” said Mothibi.

He indicated that last week’s breakdown of one of the five abstraction pumps affected water production at the purification plant.

“As a result, the Newton Reservoir’s full carrying capacity dropped. The reservoir levels are currently at 11 feet and are sufficient to provide supply outside of the nightly water supply interruption from 8pm to 5am,” Mothibi added.
