The Northern Cape Provincial Legislature (NCPL) will host its provincial Women’s parliament in celebration of Women’s month in Colesberg as well as through virtual platforms on August 30-31.

THE NORTHERN Cape Provincial Legislature (NCPL) will host its Provincial Women’s Parliament in celebration of Women’s month in Colesberg as well as through virtual platforms on August 30-31.

Spokesperson of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, Carmen Gopane, stated that there was a high prevalence of foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in communities in and around Britstown, De Aar and Colesberg.

“FAS is the most common preventable form of mental disability in the world.”

She indicated that discussions during the house sitting would focus on matters affecting women in the province such as the impact of climate change on women and economic opportunities, Gender Based Violence and Femicide, economic opportunities and the empowerment of women.

Gopane added that the portfolio committee on Department of Environment, Nature Conservation, Agriculture and Land Reform and Democracy Works Foundations would give presentations on opportunities for women in the green energy sector and agriculture and access to land.

“Presentations will be given by the portfolio committee on economic development and tourism and the Mme re ka Thusa Fund on the emancipation of women. The Portfolio Committee on Safety, Social Development and Health and the Northern Cape Liquor Board will discuss the impact of substance abuse on women, children and maternal health.”

She stated that the 2022 Provincial Women’s Parliaments aimed to encourage women to be active participants in decision making processes, municipal meetings and by-laws and financial oversight and provincial government.
