NORTHERN Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul will commemorate Freedom Day in Carnarvon in the Pixley ka Seme District on Wednesday.

The spokesperson for the Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Morapedi Sekhoane, said that MEC Desery Fienies and members of the executive council and the leadership of Kareeberg and Pixley ka Seme municipalities would also attend the event.

“A number of social dialogues will be held during the month in Pampierstad, Kathu, Williston and Keimoes. The programme will see a number of information sessions, arts festivals and rugby and netball tournaments as part of the build-up programmes. The Department of Education will also conduct flag-hoisting sessions at various schools across the Province,” said Sekhoane.

Sekhoane added that Freedom Day marked the 28th anniversary of the country’s first democratic elections that were held on April 27, 1994.

“During the month, South Africans are also encouraged to reflect on the progress made over our democratic journey.

“The preamble of the Constitution refers to a democratic and open society in which government is based on the will of the people and every citizen is equally protected by law. The Bill of Rights reaffirms that everyone has inherent dignity and the right to have their dignity respected and protected.”
