THE PLANNED protest march by Lethabo Park Phase 2 residents was stopped in its tracks after community members decided to “keep things peaceful” and rather engage with Sol Plaatje Municipality on Tuesday.

The frustrated residents made another request for Sol Plaatje mayor Kagisho Sonyoni to address them.

The residents had a change of heart after they had earlier in the day barricaded parts of Eagle and Starling streets in protest against delays to the local electrification project.

They blocked the roads with stones and rubbish early on Tuesday morning and the police were on the scene to monitor the situation.

The roads were cleared at around lunchtime.

The residents said this was just another attempt to get answers from the municipality, after they previously handed over a list of grievances and also had a round-table discussion at the municipal chambers.

An elected community delegation met with the manager in the Office of the Mayor, Vincent Phuroe, who could not provide a report back on the previous memorandum or give them updates on the electrification project.

An agreement was reached by the two parties for the mayor to address the residents.

Phuroe confirmed that they agreed that Sonyoni and the delegation would meet with the community at 5pm on Wednesday.
