Prominent ANC member removed from list

THE NORTHERN Cape ANC’s candidate lists contain a few surprises, where some members who were out in the cold have made a comeback.

It is also believed that a prominent ANC member had to be removed from the top 10 on the provincial list during the vetting process, apparently because of a theft incident that occurred while she was employed at a bank.

ANC provincial chairperson Zamani Saul is number one on the provincial list, where he is expected to be appointed as the Northern Cape premier after the elections.

The current Northern Cape Premier, Sylvia Lucas, is ranked number 76 on the national to national list, where Tina Joemat-Pettersson is 74 and Alvin Botes comes in at 56.

The former minister of energy, Joemat-Pettersson received a

R2 million golden handshake in 2017.

Former premier Dipuo Peters, Mxolisi Sokatsha, former legislature Speaker Connie Seoposengwe, the current mayor of Umsobomvu Municipality, Nombulelo Hermans, and ANC Women’s League national executive committee member Johlene Ntwane are included on the national to national list.

Former Sol Plaatje executive mayor Mangaliso Matika has also risen from the ashes, at number three on the provincial list, despite being the cause of uproar, where the community demanded his removal.

The city experienced disruptive shutdowns following the intention to implement a R260 basic electricity tariff, the purchase of the mayoral car for R1.1 million and questions over tenders, the rental of Matika’s mayoral residence and other issues.

Matika was forced to step down in September 2018, after months of digging in his heels.

Gift van Staden has made it to number six on the provincial list. He was a business partner of SA Salt Works with former ANC provincial chairperson John Block in the controversial salt mining debacle where a tussle took place over the mining rights of Vrysoutpan near Upington.

Kenny Mmoeimang placed at number five on the provincial list. He was accused of domestic violence and violating a protection order in 2015. The charges were later withdrawn.

Martha Bartlett and Neo Maneng, who were seen to be loyal to Premier Sylvia Lucas, have made it onto the provincial list.

Former Cosatu boss Anele Gxoyiya, who was voted out as provincial secretary of the federation, also appears on the provincial list. He had pledged allegiance to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Meanwhile, EFF provincial spokesperson Obakeng Lechuti said that the ANC list had “overlooked a generational and gender mix”, where the top 10 positions are dominated by men.

“The male-dominated list of the top 10 includes the alleged corrupt individuals who led to the collapse of the administration of Sol Plaatje Municipality. This is a pure power struggle, where individuals want to hold on to power and resources of the government forever.”
