“He had a great love and passion for hunting rifles. He had a larger than life humour which will be greatly missed”

A NORTHERN Cape professional hunter, Eduard “Katte” Katzke, died after he shot himself on Friday.

Katzke apparently shot himself at a hotel in Bloemfontein.

Katzke was the founder of Katzke Safaris and was also the former president of the Professional Hunters’ Association of South Africa (Phasa).

Phasa said that Katzke’s death was a great loss.

“The sad news has reached Phasa of past president Katte Katzke’s passing. We are all deeply saddened about this great loss. He left lasting memories. We pray for everyone affected by his death. Phasa expresses its deepest condolences to his wife and family, may God’s peace and comfort be with them,” said the association.

One of Katzke’s friends, Boeta Dieppenaar, said he will remember the deceased for his sense of humour.

“This is very tragic news. It is even more tragic when one does not expect it. Katte and I spent so much time together in the wild as hunters. We had been friends since 1998 or 1999. He had a great love and passion for hunting rifles. He had a larger than life humour which will be greatly missed,” said Dieppenaar.

He added that the incident has left a void within him.
