IN A BLOW to the local drug trade, members of the Prieska SAPS Crime Prevention unit arrested three suspects and seized mandrax tablets and crystal meth with an estimated street value of R57,000 on Sunday.

According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane, the unit members were conducting crime prevention duties when they received a tip-off about a person allegedly in possession of drugs in an open field in E’thembani, Prieska.

Acting on this information, the officers located and searched a male suspect, discovering mandrax tablets and a transparent plastic bag containing crystal meth (tik). The 27-year-old was promptly arrested for possession of drugs.

During the operation, officers also apprehended a 24-year-old man who was seen running through the bushes. A search revealed that he too was carrying mandrax tablets and crystal meth, leading to his arrest.

Further search efforts resulted in the arrest of a 33-year-old man found with a garden hose, suspected to be stolen property. Unable to provide a valid explanation for the hose’s ownership, he was taken into custody.

All three suspects are scheduled to appear before the Prieska Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Sergeant Shemane said that the Pixley ka Seme district commissioner, Major-General Nomana Mtukushe, commended the swift actions of the officers involved, praising their dedication in apprehending the suspects and disrupting the local drug trade.
