SOL PLAATJE Municipality is conducting an audit of prepaid electricity meters that are set to expire in November 2024.

By next year, consumers making use of meters with the old encryption key will not be able to load electricity, while any remaining units will be forfeited.

Municipal spokesperson Thoko Riet said that an audit was being carried out to ensure that all STS meters’ key revision numbers were changed to a two-part reset key before the November 2024 deadline for the token identifier (TID) roll-over programme.

“This will ensure that consumers using STS meters will still be able to purchase electricity.”

She added that prepaid electricity meter auditors would monitor whether prepaid meters were working effectively and had not been tampered with.

“The company, Ontec, has been contracted to undertake the prepaid electricity meter audit on behalf of the municipality. All auditors are required to produce an identity card with a photograph and logo of the municipality that is valid from March 1 to November 24, 2024 and an appointment letter from the municipality.”

Riet stated that meter auditors were given strict instructions to follow all prescribed Covid-19 health protocols and guidelines and to sanitise before and after entering homes or business premises.

“The municipality calls upon the community to grant the auditors access to their residences or businesses to inspect the effectiveness of their prepaid meters. Before allowing them to enter, make sure they are carrying the required identity card and appointment letter from the municipality.”

She indicated that visits to residences and businesses would be made between 8am and 6pm on weekdays.

“Where it is not possible to grant them access during these hours, appointments can be made to conduct the audit after hours.

“For more information please contact E Jansen at 082 780 5533 at the municipality or D Jacobs at 086 122 0244,” Riet concluded.
