NORTHERN Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul will lead a delegation during the provincial Women’s Day celebrations at the Port Nolloth sports stadium in the Namakwa District on Wednesday.

Provincial Department of Sports, Arts and Culture spokesperson Morapedi Sekhoane said business start-up packages will be handed over to 200 women-owned enterprises in the district.

“The MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Desery Fienies, will also donate art equipment to community arts centres. The department will roll out a variety of recreational, cultural, libraries and heritage programmes as a build-up towards Women’s Day,” said Sekhoane.

“Other departments will engage in a variety of activities and projects that seek to empower women, girls, disabled persons and the elderly throughout the month of August.

“The reality is that gender inequality still persists, with more women than men mired in poverty and unemployment. The month will focus on interventions across government, civil society and the private sector to develop women in our nation.”

He added that MEC Fienies and the MEC for Youth, Women, Persons with Disabilities, Communications and e-Governance, Venus Blennies, accompanied by other Members of the Executive Council, the executive mayor of the Namakwa District and the local leadership of the Richtersveld and Namakwa municipalities, would pay tribute to the 20,000 women who marched to the union buildings on August 9, 1956 in protest against pass laws.
