ONLY 33.61 percent of voters cast their votes during the ward 21 by-election that took place on August 31. The DA won by 58.87 percent and there are 4,397 registered voters in the ward.
Out of a total of 1,466 valid votes, DA candidate Jamie-Lee Andrea Simoné Greeff received 863 votes, followed by ANC candidate Ranolang Edwin Tokgwi with 305 votes.
FF+ candidate Johan Dawid Griesel received 214 votes, with 76 votes going to EFF candidate Selebogo Devillier More and eight votes for independent candidate Lucas Ruiters.
DA provincial leader Harold McGluwa highlighted that support for the party has increased since the 2021 local government elections, despite the party losing a number of voters due to a recent ward demarcation.
“This demonstrates appreciation for the DA’s outstanding track record where we govern and where we have turned broken towns around and transformed dysfunctional municipalities into state-of-the-art centres of excellence,” said McGluwa.
“The DA is not out to win popularity contests. We are out to win elections so that we can secure safe and drivable roads, quality drinking water, clean environments that are free of sewage spills and other services that have disappeared.
“The DA will increase its efforts to tackle poor service delivery in ward 21.”
He added the new ward councillor, Simoné Greeff, has pledged to report back to the respective community within 72 hours on the progress of addressing all service delivery issues.
