THE MULTI-disciplinary team executing Operation Vala Umgodi in Kimberley apprehended five individuals on Saturday for illegal mining.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam, the suspects, whose ages range from 33 to 67, were detained for contravening the illicit mining act.

Sam said the team, while conducting a routine patrol, encountered the suspects engaging in mining activities without the necessary permits at the old mining dumps in Lerato Park.

The team confiscated various mining tools, including spades, a wheelbarrow, buckets, sieves and a pickaxe.

The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, June 18.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious mining activities to the SAPS Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

“If you see something, say something,” Sam concluded.
