THE INDEPENDENT Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) arrested a police officer stationed at Niekerkshoop police station for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman.

Ipid spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said on Tuesday that the complainant was visiting a tavern with her friends on February 23 when the police sergeant arrived and forcefully took her cellphone.

Later that same night, she went to retrieve her phone from the officer’s residence, where she alleges that he raped her.

The incident was reported to the Niekerkshoop police station on February 26, prompting Ipid’s involvement.

“The case was reported to Ipid and the police officer was arrested on February 27. The officer will appear in the Prieska Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday,” said Shuping.
