THE DA Aar Regional Court sentenced a 30-year-old Philipstown man to seven years imprisonment for raping his 22-year-old friend.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the incident took place on February 3, 2023, at around 9pm, when a 22-year-old woman and her husband were drinking on a farm near Philipstown.

“The couple fell asleep after they had visited with a friend. The woman woke up and found the male friend raping her. She screamed for help and her husband came to her rescue,” said Kock.

He added that the accused was arrested on February 12, 2023, and was found guilty of rape.

“He was sentenced by the De Aar Regional Court to seven years direct imprisonment for rape and also declared unfit to possess a firearm.”

The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, congratulated the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Ilze Fan from the De Aar SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, for her “meticulous detective work”.

“The scourge of gender-based violence and femicide remains a priority for the SAPS. We will leave no stone unturned to ensure that perpetrators thereof are brought to justice,” said Otola.
