THE OPERATION Vala Umgodi team, operating under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Boitumelo Seleke, carried out disruptive actions in the ZF Mgcawu District of the Northern Cape on April 12. Their mission focused on combating illegal mining activities and other related crimes.
The team acted on information about drug-related activities in Postmasburg, specifically in Boichoko, Newton, and Marantheng. A 48-year-old suspect was arrested after being found in possession of mandrax tablets and dagga. Several cellphones were also confiscated during the operation.
In Marantheng, stop-and-search operations resulted in the arrest of three individuals when seven firearms were discovered in their possession. The seized weapons included four Taurus 38 special revolvers and three Rossi 38 special revolvers.
The trio, two men aged 29 and 38, respectively, and a woman aged 45, were unable to provide licences, permits or proof of ownership for the firearms. They were subsequently arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms.
The three suspects are due to make an appearance in the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the team members for their continued efforts and robust approach towards ridding the Province of illegal drugs and firearms.
