The Northern Cape Department of Education has closed its online school admission system for late applications.

THE NORTHERN Cape Department of Education closed its online school admission system for late applications on Tuesday.

The online admission system ran from January 8 to 16 to assist unplaced pupils.

The spokesperson for the Northern Cape Department of Education, Geoffrey van der Merwe, said they had to date received a total of 1,302 late applications for grades R, 1 and 8.

“These learners will be placed automatically at schools with available space,” said Van der Merwe.

“The department has taken note of the unhappiness of some parents with regards to where learners are placed. Parents were given the option of three schools when they applied for school space in the 2024 school academic year. We have done our utmost best to place the learners at either one of the three schools that were selected.”

Van der Merwe explained that the placement of learners was done according to the placement criteria.

“The latest statistics on the online admission system indicate that there are 56 outstanding placements. Our team is working around the clock to have these learners placed before the end of the week. The district offices will do head counts of learners on the first day of schooling to confirm available school spaces in order to place the outstanding learners.”

Van der Merwe stressed that the department was not able to guarantee learners’ first choice of school because of limited capacity at certain schools.

“We thank the public for their patience and indulgence in this process and we are looking forward to their co-operation in the 2024 school academic year,” he concluded.
