One dead, one injured after bakkie rolls on R31

It is believed that the driver of the bakkie had attempted to avoid a pothole in the road after overtaking a truck.

THE DELPORTSHOOP police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a man was killed when a bakkie rolled on Thursday.

The accident happened near Koopmansfontein, when a white Mahindra bakkie drove through a fence of Lovedale farm and rolled, before coming to rest on its roof.

It is believed that the driver of the bakkie had attempted to avoid a pothole in the road after overtaking a truck.

The driver was declared dead on the scene while a passenger was rushed to the Barkly West Hospital for medical treatment.

It is believed that the bakkie belongs to a distribution company in Kimberley. Newspapers belonging to Media 24 were found scattered near the overturned vehicle.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the accident occurred at about 7am on the R31 road near Koopmansfontein.

“The male driver died on the scene and his male passenger was transported to the Barkly West Hospital for medical treatment,” said Kock.

Kock said their names could not be released as their families still needed to be informed.
