ONE MAN was killed while another sustained serious injuries when the bakkie they were travelling in collided with a tree in Upington.

According to ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaak, paramedics arrived on the scene in Borcherd Street shortly after 10pm on Saturday evening, to find the vehicle on the side of the road.

“Both men were still trapped in the vehicle,” Vermaak said yesterday. “The local fire department had to use rescue tools to free them from the wreckage.

“One of them had sustained fatal injuries. There was nothing that paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene.

“The second occupant sustained serious injuries. He was treated on the scene and rushed to Dr Harry Surtie Government Hospital for further care.

“The exact circumstances surrounding this incident is not yet known. Local authorities attended the scene and will investigate.”

Police spokesperson, Captain Sergio Kock, confirmed yesterday that police were investigating a case of culpable homicide after an accident in the Upington CBD.

“It is alleged that on Saturday, at approximately 9.40pm, the driver of a Ford Ranger bakkie crashed into a tree and then into a stop sign,” said Kock yesterday.

“The driver, Jan Freeman, 60, died on the scene and his male passenger was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

“The exact cause for the accident is not known at this stage. The investigation continues.”
