Off-duty cop nabs murder suspect

An off-duty police officer arrested a suspect in Upington who was wanted in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old Zimbabwean national.

AN OFF-duty police officer arrested a suspect in Upington on February 5 who was wanted in connection with the murder of a 24-year-old Zimbabwean national.

The deceased’s body was found close to a tavern in Augrabies on February 4, at about 10.30pm.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the deceased had been stabbed in the upper body.

“The investigating officer of the murder case, Detective Sergeant Tshepo Marungwana, contacted the Augrabies SAPS Visible Policing commander, Warrant Officer Charlton Andrews, on February 5. The suspect was reported to be travelling to Kimberley by taxi from Upington,” said Kock.

He added that Andrews, who was off-duty and in Upington at the time, immediately responded and arrested the 25-year-old suspect at about 11am at the Upington taxi rank .

“The suspect will be appearing in court soon and the investigation continues,” Kock said.
