IN A SIGNIFICANT move to enhance public safety and service delivery, the Nama Khoi Local Municipality has taken a proactive step to resolve its street light backlog by purchasing 1,000 light bulbs.
The bulk purchase, made possible through the generosity of local businesses and individuals, comes at no cost to the municipality – a testament to community spirit and collaboration.
Nama Khoi mayor Rodney Kritzinger expressed his gratitude to the coalition government and local stakeholders for their support in this initiative.
“I appreciate the coalition’s support for this initiative that clearly demonstrates that the Nama Khoi coalition is committed to achieving community objectives, even under severe financial constraints,” he said.
The 1,000 light bulbs will not only address the backlog of around 500 non-operational street lights but will also ensure a sufficient supply for future replacements.
Kritzinger emphasised the importance of this project, stating that well-lit streets are crucial for both road safety and the deterrence of crime and vandalism.
“This bulk purchase, which has proven to be more cost-effective than small orders, will set a new trend in the municipality to facilitate improved value for money and service delivery,” he added.
In addition to the street light replacements, the municipality is currently developing a roll-out plan to ensure the globes are installed efficiently across all towns in the Nama Khoi region.
The mayor also highlighted ongoing efforts to address operational challenges, such as the limited availability of cherry picker vehicles, which will be crucial in speeding up the replacement process.
This initiative marks a bright step forward for the Nama Khoi community, signalling the municipality’s commitment to enhancing public infrastructure while managing financial constraints effectively.
