PHOKWANE mayor Sentse Kalman has denied that there is any political interference at the municipality or that there are any intentions to remove the municipal manager from office.

This follows a total shutdown of the Hartswater offices last week, where municipal workers protested and prevented access into the gates, in support of the municipal manager, whom they believed was instrumental in preventing corruption at the municipality.

Four people were arrested on charges of public violence and were granted bail of R300 each in the Kathu Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Kalman stated that they were still waiting for more cases to be opened by the municipal manager, involving damage to municipal property and vandalism of municipal vehicles. “These charges should be opened by the chief of administration, which is the municipal manager. So far the protests have ceased and normal operations have resumed as of Tuesday.”

She added that council was awaiting the report on the resignation of the chief financial officer.

“This item was placed on the agenda of council when the meeting was disrupted last week. Once the report has been released we will decide whether we reject the resignation or not.”

Kalman indicated that the tender awarded to Camelsa was also to be discussed at the meeting that could not proceed. “The report is also supposed to be brought to council. We are not aware of any kickbacks or benefits paid to anyone. The report will guide us in council. We are also not aware of any officials investigated for corruption.”

It is alleged that council wants to increase the contract of this service provider appointed to implement the municipal standard chart of accounts (mSCOA) from R4 million to R15 million.

She denied that any meeting was held with the ANC and the municipality, although the meeting was confirmed by the ANC as being “fruitful”.
