THE COMMUNITY of Siyancuma Local Municipality has welcomed the new playroom for hospitalised children at Hester Malan Hospital in Douglas, which was made possible thanks to funding from Boikanyo Solar Plant.

The playroom will provide a playful learning environment that will nurture and support hospitalised children receiving medical treatment.

It aims to provide a caring, safe and engaging environment for children between the ages of 0-6 years.

The support provided by the playroom includes educational learning materials, age-appropriate toys, plastic tables and chairs, storage units, bookshelves, curtains and other resources to create a welcoming and stimulating environment for the children.

Boikanyo Solar’s community liaison officer, Stephaline Fanie, said they are thrilled to support the hospital playroom initiative because they believe children possess a natural sense of wonder and a carefree attitude that should be nurtured.

“By incorporating these elements into their hospital experience, our objective is to encourage children’s innovative thinking and ensure that they do not miss out on educational opportunities while receiving medical care,” said Fanie.

She said the playroom will offer a variety of activities and resources to help children engage positively and develop essential skills during their hospital stay, while therapeutic play activities are specifically designed to help young patients cope and achieve health-care goals.

“Through various development activities and access to educational toys, it is hoped that children will experience a positive medical care journey, mitigating anxiety and stress associated with hospitalisation.”

The operations manager at Hester Malan Hospital, Dimakatso Malgas, expressed her deepest gratitude to Boikanyo Solar for their “outstanding support” in creating the playroom.

“The impact of this initiative on both the children and our health-care professionals cannot be understated. The playroom will provide a joyful and stimulating environment for the children, while our health-care staff, particularly the physiotherapist, will benefit from spending quality time with the little ones,” said Malgas.
