"The PEC resolved that Mothibi and Molola should be elected at the municipality”
A NEW mayor and Speaker will be inaugurated at Phokwane Municipality tomorrow, while a march is being planned today in support of the ousted mayor, Sentse Kalman, and Speaker, Horatius Modiakgotla,
ANC provincial secretary Deshi Ngxanga said a council meeting would be held tomorrow at 10am to elect Sisi Mothibi as the new mayor and Fana Molola into the position of Speaker.
“The Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) received three names from the ANC Frances Baard Regional Executive Committee (REC) in order of preference for the position of mayor and Speaker at Phokwane Municipality. The PEC resolved that Mothibi and Molola should be elected at the municipality,” said Ngxanga yesterday.
Kalman and Modiakgotla were reportedly still at the municipal offices last week, before the Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs obtained an interim interdict against them.
They were expelled by the ANC in June after they lost their appeals with the provincial disciplinary appeals committee.
The ANC REC had found them guilty of undermining the decision of the ANC caucus, collaborating with the opposition in council and dividing the ANC in the sub-region.
A protest was staged outside the Phokwane municipal offices last week, where demands were made that both Kalman and Modiakgotla should be reinstated and that the administrator step down with immediate effect.
ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule stepped in on June 26, where he instructed Ngxanga to suspend “all further action” against the two expelled members pending an investigation by the ANC National Executive Committee.
Ngxanga had indicated that they would not overturn the expulsion of either Kalman or Modiakgotla.
