THE NORTHERN Cape’s leading lady in crime fighting and prevention, provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, was handed the sword of command by national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola during a ceremony that took place at Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley on Thursday.
Otola, who is one of five female provincial police commissioners serving in the country, was appointed in August this year.
“The appointment of Lieutenant-General Otola brought the number of female appointments to five against the four male appointments. This is a sign that women in the police are breaking boundaries,” said Masemola.
He said he has confidence that Otola will never forsake her duties.
“Lieutenant-General Otola is on par with the dynamics of the Province as she is from the Northern Cape. I am confident that she will form broader partnerships with law enforcement agencies as well as the community of this Province to win the war against crime.”
Masemola urged Otola to carry out her duty with dignity and pride.
“The responsibilities bestowed on the provincial commissioner should be carried out with pride. We expect that you (Otola) will pay much attention to crime prevention in order to bring criminals to book. You must also have a strategic approach when working with the community as well as with neighbouring provinces. Always remember to lead the Province with dignity and consolidate a team who will assist in the fight against crime,” Masemola advised.
Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul and the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Nomandla Bloem, attended the ceremony.
