NC school benefits from new classrooms

NOORD-Kaap Primary School in Olifantshoek was able to expand its capacity thanks to the addition of two newly built Grade R classrooms as part of REISA’s flagship Ubuntu Schools Project.

The infrastructure project provided additional space for 60 community learners, which capacitated the school to meet the outlined regulations for Grade R learners to be schooled separately from the rest of the school.

The two classrooms are already being used at their full capacity..

Noord-Kaap Primary School is one of only two primary schools serving the Olifantshoek community.

The school was originally built in 1998 to accommodate 800 learners from the local community and surrounding farm areas. Now it can accommodate an increased capacity.

The additional infrastructure was viewed as essential and it was accompanied by secure fencing to separate these classrooms from the rest of the school.

Veronique Isaacs, project community operations officer for REISA, expressed pride in their contribution to education in the community.

“We recognised a need for more Grade R classrooms to provide more opportunities for children from the surrounding community to have a safe space in terms of early childhood development. We are pleased that they are now enjoying the benefits,” said Isaacs.

She added that an extensive local community participation process was followed, which resulted in the appointment of local contractors to construct the classrooms.

“As Noord-Kaap Primary School forms part of REISA’s Ubuntu Schools Project, further needs will be identified and supported, depending on available funding. We will undertake to provide additional support, as identified by the school, in alignment with our socio-economic development programmes,” concluded Isaacs.

The acting school principal, Joseph Vries, highlighted the importance of ECD classrooms in the community and said that they strive to accommodate pre-school learners in a safe learning environment.
