A NORTHERN Cape man who was found guilty of raping a 51-year-old woman and assaulting a 53-year-old woman was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment by the Kathu Regional Court.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba said the rape incident took place on January 5, 2019, when the accused, Obakeng Mocumi, lured the 51-year-old woman to the Deben dumping site. “He (Mocumi) operated on the pretence that she could collect old clothes that he had picked up.”

Ramatseba said that Mocumi raped the woman at knifepoint.

“He was arrested and released on bail. After he was released on bail, he assaulted a 53-year-old woman at her house. He was re-arrested on August 12, 2019 and remained in custody until he was sentenced.”

Mocumi was on Wednesday sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for rape and three years for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The sentences will run concurrently.

The provincial police management welcomed the sentence and applauded the investigating officers, Sergeant Maletsatsi Smouse and Constable Pako Bele, for their thorough investigation of the case.
