A NUMBER of intelligence-driven crime-prevention operations were carried out in the Northern Cape over the weekend, where raids, stop-and-searches, intensive patrols and daily crime-prevention actions were conducted from March 24 to 26.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said a white Toyota Quantum minibus was searched by the SAPS highway patrol unit as it was busy unloading cables at a local scrapyard in Kuruman.
“Four suspects tried to flee upon arrival of the police although they were swiftly cornered and arrested,” said Sam.
He said the vehicle, as well as 64 rolls of suspected stolen copper cable valued at R35,700, was confiscated by the police.
“Two suspects, aged 23 and 38 years old, were charged with tampering with essential infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen property. They are expected to appear in the Kathu Magistrate’s Court soon.”
Sam added that four suspects were arrested in Postmasburg and Danielskuil for dealing in drugs.
“The police seized 109 tablets of mandrax, 24 zip-lock bags of tik and a substantial amount of dagga, with an estimated street value of R39,989.92.”
Sam said that the police in Hopetown raided an illegal shebeen and confiscated and disposed of alcohol concoctions.
“A fine of R500 was issued to a 27-year-old suspect for operating an illegal shebeen and another 44-year-old suspect was arrested for riotous behaviour.”
Sam concluded by saying that the police would increase their efforts to prevent, combat and investigate crime and ensure that all the Province’s residents are safe.
