PHOKWANE Local Municipality has warned service providers of a scam where business people are being lured into fraudulent deals supposedly with the municipality.

Phokwane Municipality spokesperson Kgalalelo Letshabo explained yesterday that a fraudulent domain was registered as [email protected].

She said that the e-mails were formatted to make it appear as if they were sent from the municipality. “The e-mail requests the receiver to contact the chief financial officer (CFO) regarding the supply and delivery of materials.

“Phokwane Local Municipality would like to distance itself from these criminal activities. We further advise that anyone who receives an e-mail from this address to open a criminal case. Please do not respond to them, but instead contact the procurement section of the municipality for confirmation on 053 474 9700.”

Letshabo warned that the suspects could also be making use of other e-mail addresses or accounts or even the identities of former CFOs, such as Khoboane or [email protected], who had since left the municipality.
