GA-SEGONYANA Local Municipality has rubbished allegations that a 50-year lease that was signed for a shopping development in Kuruman is in any way irregular.

The Northern Cape Civics Organisation has requested the Hawks to investigate the lease that was concluded for 30 years and that would automatically be renewed until the year 2068 upon the expiry date.

The development has not been able to proceed due to legal action taken by several small businesses who are operating on the land and who are challenging their eviction.

Ga-Segonyana municipal manager Martin Tsatsimpe stated that all matters had been dealt with by the Northern Cape High Court.

“The court dismissed the review application of the appointment of the developer to erf 2564 with costs on March 10, 2023. Following this judgment, an eviction application was successful in the same court and was handed down on January 19 with costs in favour of the municipality,” said Tsatsimpe.

He added that the court dismissed with costs an application to appeal the eviction order on June 18.

“The applicants in the eviction order have further approached the Supreme Court of Appeal. Therefore the matter is still sub judice.”

Tsatsimpe stated that the allegations were “unfounded and factually incorrect”.
