A 20-year-old Northern Cape man who was found guilty of raping and impregnating a 15-year-old girl will serve an effective one-year sentence.
A 20-YEAR-old Northern Cape man who was found guilty of raping and impregnating a 15-year-old girl will serve an effective one-year sentence.
Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the matter was reported to the Department of Social Development in De Aar and the De Aar SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit after the girl gave birth on February 10.
“The investigating officer instituted an investigation into the pregnancy. The accused was arrested and charged with statutory rape after the girl identified him,” said Tawana.
He added that the accused was “issued with a stern warning” in the De Aar Regional Court on Monday, where he was also sentenced to six years’ imprisonment, five years of which were suspended.
“The accused’s name was ordered to be entered in the National Register for Sex Offenders and he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
“The provincial police management welcomed the sentence handed down while the country is observing Child Protection Month.”
