It is believed that the two girls apparently met the suspect at a local tuck shop.
A 31-YEAR-old man from Boichoko in Postmasburg is expected to appear in the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court soon in connection with the rape of two teenage girls.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba said on Friday that the girls, aged 16 and 17 years, apparently met the suspect at a local tuck shop on Saturday, April 18 at around 4pm.
“He allegedly lured them to his shanty, where they were reportedly threatened with a knife and subsequently raped by the suspect. The suspect fled after the incident.”
Members of the Postmasburg SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit launched an intensive search for the suspect and he was arrested on Tuesday, April 21.
The suspect appeared briefly before the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and the case was rolled over to Friday for the suspect’s legal aid bid.
The provincial head of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit in the Northern Cape, Brigadier Nicky Mills, applauded the SAPS members for their swift arrest of the suspect. “We will leave no stone unturned in making sure that the case is meticulously investigated,” Mills added.
Meanwhile, a 37-year-old Noupoort man, who raped an 82-year-old woman in the town, appeared before the Noupoort Magistrate’s Court earlier this week and the case was postponed to April 28, 2020 for a formal bail application.
Members of the De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit will oppose any attempts by the suspect to be released on bail, in order to enable police to investigate the case thoroughly.
The incident happened in Noupoort on Saturday morning at 2am.
The arrest came after an intensive search was launched for the suspect, who was apprehended at around 3pm the following afternoon.
According to the police, the woman was asleep at her home when the suspect broke into the house. “The victim tried to resist the intruder but was allegedly strangled and then raped.
“The victim received medical treatment at the local hospital for minor injuries on the neck,” the police stated.
