NC man sentenced to 30 years for rape

A 23-year-old Northern Cape man, who was found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman, was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment by the Mothibistad Regional Court.

A 23-YEAR-old man, who was found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman, was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment by the Mothibistad Regional Court on January 31.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the accused, Kagisho Smaus, was arrested in March 2020.

Smaus found the woman inside her house after she had come home from fetching water on March 10, 2020, at around 6.30am. He threatened her with a knife and forcefully raped her before fleeing the scene.

The provincial head for the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, Brigadier Sipho Kheswa, applauded Warrant Officer Kenalemang Victoria Babeile from the Kuruman FCS unit for her “meticulous” investigation that led to the conviction.
