A 27-YEAR-old Northern Cape man, Allister Gustav Femmers, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment after he was convicted in the Barkly West Regional Court of raping a 24-year-old woman in Holpan, Windsorton on January 29, 2022.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the complainant, who resided in Barkly West, was visiting friends in Windsorton on the day of the incident.

“Her friends did not assist her in transporting her back home when she requested them and she ended up meeting the accused, who offered to accompany her to her aunt’s house in the same area,” said Sam.

“She could not gain access to her aunt’s place and ended up sleeping at her cousin’s shanty in the same yard.”

Sam added that while the complainant was sleeping, she was sexually assaulted.

“She recognised the perpetrator as being her cousin’s friend who accompanied her to her aunt’s house.

“She tried pushing him away, but he overpowered her and continued raping her until her cousin rescued her and alerted the police.”

The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, applauded the Hartswater SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit and the investigating officer in the matter, Detective Sergeant George Mosime, for the work they did in securing the sentence.

“The community is assured that the perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide are brought to book and the police will continue to ensure that gender-based violence victims are protected and feel safe,” Otola added.
