A NORTHERN Cape man who sexually groomed his seven-year-old niece, by introducing her to pornographic material, and raped her several times was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Kathu Regional Court.

Police spokesperson Captain Sergio Kock said the incidents took place in Mapoteng village, Kathu, between August 2012 and June 2016.

He said the girl’s parents “confronted” her after noticing that she was acting strangely.

“When she was 11 years old, she broke her silence about what had happened to her. The uncle was arrested on June 28, 2016 and received bail approximately two years later,” said Kock.

He said the accused was sentenced in the Kathu Regional Court this week to life imprisonment for rape, five years for sexual grooming, five years for exposing a child to pornographic material and a further five years for rape.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Kock added that the accused was also declared unfit to carry a firearm. His name was also entered in the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The provincial head of the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit in the Northern Cape, Brigadier Nicky Mills, welcomed the sentences.

The SAPS management in the Northern Cape also lauded the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Boikanyo Pilane from Kathu FCS, “for a job well done”.
