A second accused had been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for his involvement in the crime
A 23-YEAR-old man was this week sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mothibistad Regional Court after he was found guilty of raping a mentally ill family member.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the incident took place in June 2016, where the accused and another family member raped the woman, who was related to them.
“On the day of the incident the two men walked with the complainant to a nearby tavern in Petersham village in Mothibistad. Along the way they held her down and took turns to rape her,” said Tawana.
He said that the second accused had been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for his involvement in the crime.
“Both accused were declared unfit to possess firearms. Their names have been recorded in the sex offenders register,” added Tawana.
“The Northern Cape police management applauded the investigating officer, warrant officer Tebogo Nowalaza, for the commitment and dedication he displayed during the investigation.”
