The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, has welcomed the life sentence handed down to a man who brutally murdered an eight-year-old boy.
THE PROVINCIAL commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, has welcomed the life-long prison sentence handed down to a man for the murder of an eight-year-old boy.
Gladwin Steenkamp was sentenced in the High Court in Upington on October 13 for killing the young boy in Kenhardt on November 30, 2022.
Steenkamp assaulted his girlfriend on November 29, 2022, and after she and her mother went to register a case of assault at the local police station the following day, Steenkamp went to his girlfriend’s house and took her eight-year-old brother and murdered him by slitting the boy’s throat.
Steenkamp then covered the murdered boy with a duvet and hid the body under a bed, where the mother later discovered it.
The “meticulous investigation” by Detective Warrant Officer Elrich Mienies of the Kenhardt SAPS led to the conviction of Steenkamp, who was handed down a life sentence.
He also received an additional sentence of 14 years for assaulting his girlfriend.
State prosecutor advocate Tercheen Engelbrecht also played an integral part in securing the “outstanding prosecution”.
