The Mothibistad Regional Court handed down an 18-year direct prison sentence to a 33-year-old man who raped his ex-girlfriend.
THE MOTHIBISTAD Regional Court handed down an 18-year direct prison sentence to Gert Monye, 33, who was convicted of raping his ex-girlfriend.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said on Monday that the incident occurred on May 3, 2014, when Monye forcefully took his former girlfriend from her friend’s residence and assaulted and raped her in a bushy area.
“The police’s meticulous investigation resulted in the State successfully opposing bail and led to the prison sentence,” said Sam.
The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, applauded the investigating officer in the matter, Sergeant Matshidiso Boikanyo, for “ensuring that perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide are successfully prosecuted”.
