NC man gets 15 years for raping 16-year-old girl

A 38-year-old Northern Cape man was sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment by the Kimberley Regional Court on Wednesday after he was found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl.

The accused, Shaun van Niekerk (alias Tupac), and a male friend were drinking at his shanty in Deetlefsville, Strydenburg with the girl when the incident took place on October 29, 2017.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said that after the friend left, Van Niekerk threatened the girl with a knife and raped her in his shanty.

“The accused fled and was later traced in Noordgesig in Johannesburg on December 6, 2018,” said Kock.

He added that Van Niekerk was sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for rape and was declared unfit to carry a firearm. “His name will be entered in the register for sexual offenders.”

The provincial head of the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, Brigadier Nicky Mills, lauded the investigating officer, Detective Constable Ricardo Kock from the Hopetown FCS, for ensuring that the perpetrator was incarcerated.
