NC man gets 15 years for rape of disabled woman

The 44-year-old man was found guilty of raping a disabled 27-year-old woman.

AN ACCUSED who was found guilty of raping a disabled 27-year-old woman, was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in the Upington Regional Court on Thursday July 29.

The accused Gerrit Brian Mieneis, 44, was convicted for raping the woman who is both deaf and mute, on two occasions when she visited her aunt in Pabellelo on April 27 and May 4 2019.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sergio Kock said the accused was the aunt’s boyfriend.

“A case was reported to the police May 5 2019 and the accused was arrested May 20. He was denied bail and remained in custody up until his sentencing in the Upington Regional Court.”

He stated that the accused was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for the first rape and another 15 years for the second rape.

“The sentences will run concurrently.”

The Provincial Head for Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Brigadier Nicky Mills commended Detective Sergeant Howard Loabile for his investigative work in this relatively complicated case.

“Late nights of dedication eventually paid off and the perpetrator of this senseless crime is paying for his deeds behind bars,” Mills said.
