A NORTHERN Cape man was sentenced to 12 years’ direct imprisonment for stabbing a man to death during an argument over a hookah pipe

The accused, Francois Visagie, was sentenced for the murder of Michael Mouton in the Upington Regional Court on Tuesday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said Mouton was fatally stabbed at a tavern in Rietfontein in November 2019.

“Mouton and his brother were seated at the tavern at the time of the incident. The accused wrestled with them over a hookah pipe. The argument subsided but later restarted. During the argument, Visagie stabbed Mouton in the upper body. Mouton left the tavern and ran home, where he later died as a result of the stab wound inflicted,” said Tawana.

He added that the Northern Cape police management applauded the investigating officer in the matter, Sergeant Jam Tyres, for the “meticulous investigative work” that led to the conviction.
