A 35-YEAR-old man, Bolelang Kopang, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Pampierstad Regional Court after he was found guilty of raping a 21-year-old woman.

Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the incident took place after the woman’s family had asked Kopang to fix their DStv.

“The incident occurred in January 2018. The family requested the accused to fix their DStv at their home. The complainant was home alone at the time. The accused pinned the complainant down and raped her inside the bedroom. She managed to escape and ran for help. The accused fled the scene but was arrested after the complainant laid a charge at the Pampierstad police station,” said Tawana.

Kopang was sentenced to 10 years behind bars and the magistrate also declared him unfit to possess a firearm and instructed that his name be recorded in the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Tawana added that the investigating officer was commended for his work on the case.

“The Northern Cape provincial head of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units, Brigadier Nicky Mills, commended Sergeant Edwin Thabapelo for the meticulous investigative work in the rape case.

“Brigadier Mills also praised the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the Department of Justice for putting the accused behind bars.”
