THE SPEAKER of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, Newrene Klaaste, together with all Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) and the administration, has conveyed condolences following the death of the former Speaker, Jacobus Frederick van Wyk.

Klaaste described Van Wyk, who was affectionately known as “Oom Boeboe”, as a knowledgeable and diligent public servant.

“The Northern Cape has indeed lost a humble man of stature and a great public figure who possessed great wisdom. The immense contributions made by Oom Boeboe will forever be written in the books of the legislature,” said Klaaste.

“His accolades were spread across the political spectrum, community upliftment and in academics. Oom Boeboe served as a Speaker in the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2010 until 2013. He had previously occupied several positions as a Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), including chief whip in the legislature and Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) in the Safety and Liaison, Housing and Local Government and the Health departments. He also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1997.

“The legislature sends heartfelt condolences to his family, the Namakwa community and the Northern Cape community at large.”
