PREMIER Zamani Saul will deliver the State of the Province address (Sopa) towards the end of February, as the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature gears up for the national general elections.

A date for the elections has yet to be announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The term of office of the provincial legislatures and the National Assembly expires on May 21. In terms of the Constitution, the elections must be held within 90 days of the expiry of the current term.

The spokesperson for the Office of the Speaker in the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, Mpho Masina, said they were embarking on an intense voter registration campaign to encourage voters to make their mark.

“This will be an a-political campaign, as each party will run its party-affiliated campaign independently,” said Masina.

“Ordinarily, with every election year a second official opening of the legislative term is held shortly after the elections. New political party representatives as well as the premier and executive members will be sworn in.

“Amidst the celebrations of 30 years of democracy, the months before and post the elections will see legislature fulfilling its constitutional mandate coupled with intense public participation,“ she added.
